The fact that the government would have been defeated on not having an EU referendum 'purdah' period had all the opposition parties joined the 27 Tory rebels underlines how slim the government's majority is.
It was Europe that caused such problems in the 1992-97 government, and Europe that is likely to do so again. The whips will have to work overtime to keep other controversial measures on track too.
So, in the end, only 27 Conservative MPs rebelled over plans to give the government a free hand in the final weeks of the forthcoming EU referendum campaign.Not much to see here, you might think, time to move along. And yet what we saw today at Westminster was fascinating, the growing pains of a new parliament on show for all to see.
