The majority Conservative Government is taking an unexpected interventionist line with business. From the apprenticeships announcement made in the recent Budget through to these moves on equal pay, this is not a 'light touch' government.
The government is showing that if businesses do not behave in a way that they find acceptable then they will seek to impose new rules, regulations and costs.
Businesses should expect more of this type of government action and, as a result, this should inform their behaviour.
Large companies will be forced to publish details of the pay gap between men and women, David Cameron has announced in a move which puts him in direct conflict with business leaders. Mr Cameron said that he wants to "create the pressure we need for change" to help drive up women's wages and close the pay gap between men and women "within a generation".
